Mice & Rats
Mice and rats, while considered cute by some, may harbour diseases. Most common to Vancouver
are the House Mouse, Norway rat and Roof Rat. With the droppings, urine and hairs,
rats have the practice of contaminating everything they come across. What is more dangerous is that
the rodents carry a wide range of diseases and parasites that are harmful to humans and animals.
The Common House Mouse

House Mice are gray or brown, small and slender, weighing 20-30 grams with relatively large ears and small eyes. They have short hair and a light belly. The normal gait is a run with a stride of about 4.5 cm (1.8 in), though they can jump up to 45 cm (18 in). The voice is a high-pitched squeak
The Norway Rat
The Norway Rat is a rather large member of the mouse family. The nose is blunt and the ears are small. They are about 13 to 18 inches long including the 6 to 8 1/2 inch tail and weight about 11 ounces. Their fur is coarse and mostly brown with scattered black on the upper surfaces. The underside is typically grey to yellowish-white.
The Roof Rat - (Black Rat)
Roof Rat or Black Rat is a a blackish or brownish, medium-sized, slender rat with long, naked, scaly tail; usually longer than head and body. A typical Roof Rat will be 15-20 cm (5.9 to 7.9 in) long with a further 20 cm (7.9 in) of tail.They are good at climbing, running and jumping but are poor swimmers. It is nocturnal and omnivorous, with a preference for grains and fruit. Roof rats frequently enter buildings from the roof or accesses near utility lines and hanging tree branches on the roof, support structural infestation.
About Mice & Rats

In a residential home, you may find mice,
rats or their droppings (which are black in colour) underneath kitchen or bathroom sinks,
along baseboards behind major appliances, in the crawlspace or attic.
In a commercial or
industrial site, you may find droppings in areas such as boiler rooms, behind desks, in cafeterias,
in false ceilings, behind storage racks in warehouses, etc.
