Wildlife: How to deal with Skunks, Raccoons or Squirrels!

Sep 12, 2013

Often we get phone calls from people wondering whether or not we can trap and relocate problem animals from their property, the short answer is: we don’t. To simply trap an animal and move it to a new spot is not nearly as effective as it sounds. There are many reasons for this, which we will explore.

Firstly, this method of practice is viewed as inhumane, causing severe stress to the animal. It also results in separating a mother from its young, causing the baby animals to starve. Often, animals get hurt in this process, typically becoming stuck in the trap.

Secondly, as a wildlife company in British Columbia, we do not have a permit to trap and relocate, in fact no one can obtain this permit in the lower mainland. Also, wildlife like skunks, squirrels and raccoons leave a scent, which even if you remove the pests, will lure new pests onto your property.

So, you may be wondering: if you can’t move the animal, how do you get rid of them? We do provide options depending your situation. A common solution is what we call ‘exclusion work’, which means we set up a one-way door, and also seal up the entry points and when the animal needs to leave their nest (which they’ve conveniently set up on your property), they simply walk through the door and are unable to return. When they realize they cannot re-enter this area they will relocate themselves, and after a week or so we will remove the one-way door and seal up the final hole, which effectively and efficiently removes them without causing any harm to the animal. This acts as a permanent solution, as no future pests can enter.

If you have any questions, we’d love to hear from you, please give us a call!
